Super Eagles Legends
Augustine Azuka Okocha — known to the world as Jay-Jay — is one of the most gifted footballers Africa has ever produced. A generation of Nigerians grew up imitating his step-overs, and Premier League fans at Bolton loved him so much they sang that he was “so good they named him twice.” Here’s the story of the magician.
From Enugu to the world stage
Okocha began at Enugu Rangers before a move to Germany, where a jaw-dropping solo goal against Karlsruhe — dancing past goalkeeper Oliver Kahn — announced him to Europe. Spells at Eintracht Frankfurt and Fenerbahçe followed, and in 1998 he became, at the time, the most expensive African player in history when Paris Saint-Germain signed him.
The Bolton years
It was at Bolton Wanderers (2002–2006) that English fans fell in love. As captain he produced moments of pure theatre in the Premier League — free-kicks, flicks and that famous chant — and helped a modest club punch far above its weight.
Super Eagles icon
For Nigeria, Okocha was the heartbeat: a Golden Age of the Super Eagles, Olympic gold at Atlanta 1996, multiple World Cups and an Africa Cup of Nations pedigree. Even Ronaldinho has named him as an inspiration — the ultimate compliment for a showman.
