Super Eagles
Few sights in modern football are as instantly recognisable as Victor Osimhen in his black protective mask. For Nigeria fans it has become part of the Super Eagles striker’s identity — a symbol of the resilience that has carried him from Lagos to the top of European football. But why does he wear it, and will he ever take it off?
The injury behind the mask
The mask dates back to November 2021. Playing for Napoli in a Serie A match against Inter Milan, Osimhen suffered a sickening clash of heads while challenging for the ball. The collision left him with multiple fractures to his cheekbone and eye socket, and he needed surgery to repair the damage.
It was a serious, potentially career-threatening facial injury. When he returned to action weeks later, he did so wearing a carbon-fibre protective mask to shield the healing bones — and a football icon was born.
Why he still wears it
Medically, the mask protects the area that was fractured from any further impact — and for an aggressive, aerial striker who attacks every cross, that protection matters. But over time the mask became more than medical equipment. It turned into part of Osimhen’s personal brand: fans wear replica masks to games, and it instantly identifies him on the pitch and in highlight reels.
Plenty of players have worn protective masks after facial injuries — from Fernando Torres to Son Heung-min — but few have made it as iconic as Osimhen.
The celebration that went viral
Osimhen leaned into the look. Lifting or pointing to the mask after scoring became a trademark celebration during his record-breaking Serie A title season with Napoli, when he fired the club to its first Scudetto in over 30 years and won the league’s top-scorer award.
More than a mask
Since his big-money move and subsequent switch to Galatasaray, the mask has travelled with him — a reminder of the comeback that defines his career. For Nigeria, he remains the talisman the Super Eagles build around.
