Fleetwood Town 1–1 Arsenal · Fleetwood win 5–3 on penalties · Carabao Cup fourth round
Football keeps promising you nights like this and then almost never delivers. This week it delivered. Fleetwood Town — fourth tier, modest budget, a ground you could probably tuck inside one stand at the Emirates — knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on penalties, in front of their own gloriously disbelieving supporters.
The magic of the cup, for once literally
It finished 1–1, and if you only read the scoreline you’d miss the whole point. Arsenal arrived much-changed, as big clubs always do in this round, expecting the gulf in divisions to sort itself out. Fleetwood had other ideas: they defended like their lives depended on it, took their moment when it came, and dragged the tie to the one place where reputations count for nothing — a shootout. There, 5–3, the minnows held their nerve and the favourites did not.
Rotation is a gamble, and the house won
Here’s the friction every manager pretends doesn’t exist: rest your stars in the cup and you’re “managing the squad”; lose to a fourth-tier side and you’re “disrespecting the competition.” It’s the same team sheet either way — only the result decides which headline you get. Arsenal rolled the dice on rotation. Fleetwood, treating this as the biggest night of their season, made them pay for it.
Where it leaves Arsenal
A title-chasing side can shrug off an early cup exit; the trophies that define a season are elsewhere. But the manner of it stings, and there’s no soft landing: next up is a trip to Anfield for a genuine heavyweight afternoon. We break that one down in our matchday predictions.
Our take: this is exactly why the romantics keep watching the League Cup. Somewhere in Lancashire, grown adults are still crying happy tears. Somewhere in north London, a very expensive squad is pretending it didn’t matter.
